To keep him smiling and spread some positivity, Plymouth-based illustrator, designer and animator Pete Clayton has been enjoying a 30-day passion project, creating brightly coloured posts for Instagram, all hand-drawn and combined with typographic cheerful messages.
“I like to encourage and inspire. The world at the moment, with the current pandemic, is very uncertain and also I have recently been going through a personal breakup and this has been a kind of therapy for me,” Pete tells Creative Boom. “In short, I think we all need a positive boost every now and then and what better way to do that than through illustration and visual metaphors.”
As we browse through Pete’s illustrations, we see messages like ‘Speak your mind’ and ‘Feel your feelings’. They’re a good reminder to us all. “I am by no means a self-help guru,” Pete continues, “but I have a passion for visual storytelling and like to dispense advice from my point of view and if it can help other people along the way then that would be the main goal.”
Pete learned his trade at Plymouth Art College and then later at Cardiff School of Art. He lived and worked in Estonia for five years, honing his skills as a creative, before moving back to his home town of Plymouth to work as a senior designer.
Last October, he took a “partial plunge” into self-employment and turned his “side-hustle” into a proper business. As a creative, Pete specialises in an array of disciplines including editorial illustration, illustration for branding, animation, campaign creative and the occasional logo. “My creative aesthetic combines humour and visual wit with both digital and hand-drawn styles,” he says.
“I do what I do because I am passionate about visual storytelling, the creative industry as a whole and I’m very lucky that this creative life is not only my hobby but also my profession. I’ve been drawing man and boy and now I get to do it for a living… happy days!”
