“All these forms are almost logos,” says Rob Lowe of his latest release of prints. “They are playing with depth and what can be suggested with very little, as most of my work is.”
Known far and wide as Supermundane, Lowe is, of course, talking about turning his favourite song lyrics into abstract forms. Made for a closing exhibition in Belgium last year called, I Know It’s Over.
“Once I had this title, which is from a Smiths song, it started to make me think of nostalgia of the past,” he continues. “Music has always been important to me and serves as a way of defining periods of my life. I went through songs that meant something to me and took short lyrics from them, these were then attached to the abstract forms at random.
“Through this act of indeterminacy new links where created. The forms took on new meanings other than that the of pure abstraction of their origin.”
Each print has just two colours, black and then another which is unique to that print – although some are similar.
The paper used for the prints is called Tyvek, “which isn’t a paper at all but a synthetic fibrous material most commonly used for wristbands and protecting buildings during construction”, Lowe adds. “I thought something was interesting in using a very tough, long-lasting, material for a show called ‘I Know It’s Over’. It was also a practical choice which meant I could use tape to hang the prints in the gallery and not damage the work.”
There are a whopping 71 different prints in total. Notable mentions include song lyrics such as, “I’ve been stung by the love bee, it stuck its thing in me” and “Your madness fits in nicely with my own”.
Of the project, Lowe says “I was born in 1971, but it was also the amount I could fit in the gallery to fill it. It was a big undertaking to produce them all, one of the biggest personal projects.”
The even better news? The prints will be on display in Lowe’s online shop later this month as a virtual exhibition for two weeks from the 23 September. They will then go on sale on the 26 September.
